How does the multi-slice CT scanner technology work?

04-07-2017

Our patients often ask about multi-slice CT technology that what does a „slice” mean and how do the number of slices affect the test. In this brief summary, you will get the answers to all of these questions.

What is worth knowing about multi-slice CT scanner?

The first multi slice scanners were introduced in 1998. Since then, thanks to the development of technology, scanners from 4 to 320 slice capabilities have become available.

What does a „slice” mean regarding the CT scan?

Similar to bread slicing, the CT machine divides the body into slices. The pictures of the slices – taken by the machine – show the bones, organs, soft tissue and blood vessels with the help of the computer that converts the original 2 dimensional pictures into detailed 3 dimensional images. The multi-slice CT scanning technology enables the physician to make a diagnosis based on the specifically detailed images.

What is the difference between the 4, 6, 12 and 16 slice CT scanners?

A higher slice count reduces scan time and produces a higher picture resolution for some types of images. At Medicover, we are proud to have one of Hungary’s most advanced computed tomography scanner. Our 16 slice Siemens SOMATOM Scope CT scanner is capable of producing an excellent image quality even at lower dose.

Are more slices always better?

It depends on what your physician is looking for. In certain cases when it’s essential to recognize the slightest alteration it is reasonable to use a multi-slice scanner preparing as much slices as it is necessary to identify the smallest abnormalities. In other cases, the number of slices is not amongst the most important factors.

In which case the 64 to 320 slice CT scanners are being used?

These machines have been developed for satisfying the needs of the cardiac or research institutions.
