Laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy

When is ovarian cystectomy needed?

Cysts are common in the ovaries. Most of the women have one or more cyst in the ovaries at some point in their life, sometimes they disappear before they can be discovered at a routine gynecological exam.

It can happen to women at every age however it’s more common during the reproductive years.

It should be removed when it causes symptoms, affects fertility or malignancy is suspected.

When the cyst doesn’t disappear on its own, it can start to grow leading to pain, menstrual cramps or even infertility.

How does the procedure go?

Thanks to the state-of-the-art techniques used in gynecology, the surgery doesn’t last long, there are no several centimeter-long incisions on the abdomen (this makes a huge difference aesthetically) and the recovery time is shorter.

At Medicover Hospitalwe use a special laparoscopic tool. With the help of that, 3 or 4 small (0.5-1 mm) incision is made on the wall of the abdomen. This allows your doctor to examine your abdomen, and more specifically your ovaries, and to remove the unwanted cysts. The goal is always to preserve the tissue and the ovaries to make sure your reproductive health is not affected by the surgery.

The removed tissue is sent to histology to make sure there is no malignancy involved and to make a final diagnosis.

What are the risks of the operation?

Laparoscopic surgeries in general are safe and routine procedures without much side effects or risks. The rate of serious complications is only around 1-2%.

The anesthesia can cause allergic reactions which is easily managed by our hospital staff.

After surgery some people can experience lower abdominal pain or discomfort which can be managed with pain medication.
