World Blood Donor Day 2017

World Blood Donor Day 2017

14-06-2017

World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) first initiated the celebration of blood donors in 2004 on the 14th of June. The whole world since then honors people who give and donate blood frequently as they save numerous lives and offer hope to those in need.

In the past centuries natural disasters (such as earthquakes, floods, heavy storms) and man-made catastrophes (accidents, wars, armed conflicts) caused the death of more than one million people and put in danger another 250 million. This year WHO chose the emergency blood donation as their main theme.

The slogan of 2017 is: What can you do? Give blood. Give now. Give often.

Why should you donate blood?

  • Because blood donors are life savers and heroes.
  • Because when you give blood you also receive a free feedback about your health as they inspect your blood before they donate it to anyone else
  • Because a single blood donation can save three lives: from the blood drawn from you doctors can make blood plasma, red blood cells and platelet
  • Because giving blood is a community experience

Who can be blood donor?

  • Who feels himself healthy
  • Who is over the age of 18 but isn’t over 65 yet
  • Who weighs more than 50 kilograms
  • Who hasn’t given blood in the last 56 days
  • Who isn’t hemophiliac, doesn’t usually faint and isn’t breastfeeding
